Vanilla beans are pleasantly fragrant fruit pods obtained from the tropical climbing orchid, V. planifolia. Mayans were the first people to use them in chocolate drinks as a flavoring agent centuries before the Spanish explorers first set their foot in Mexico in 1520. This highly prized aromatic bean pod is can be used in any beverage, dessert or recipe that calls for powdered vanilla or vanilla essence. One bean is roughly equivalent to three teaspoons of essence.
Vanilla beans have a great deal of flavour and can be reused 2 or 3 times before their aroma and taste are depleted. After a pod has been used in an infusion, it can be thoroughly washed and dried (hung in the kitchen for a day or two to air dry works well), then stored in an airtight container until required again.
Storage:
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration is recommended in warm climates.
